Last half term, Year Two pupils at William Martin Church of England Infant School were inspired to write love letters to the Earth after reading Isabel Otter’s ‘Dear Earth’.
The children were utterly engrossed by the story, which follows schoolgirl Tessa on a fun-packed adventure around the world. After finishing the book, classes were concerned about climate change and wanted to learn more about how we can better look after the planet. This inspired the children to carry out some research into David Attenborough and his famous ‘Our Planet’ series. In the style of ‘Dear Earth’, pupils then wrote their own love letters to the Earth, which the school posted to David Attenborough.
The school has recently received a letter back from the world-renowned narrator, thanking the children for their letters and their passion for saving the planet.
Gina Bailey, Headteacher at William Martin Church of England Infant and Junior School said; “This was a brilliant experience for the children as it showed them that their hard work and effort has had an amazing, authentic outcome. We are very proud of their work and even prouder that David Attenborough enjoyed reading their letters so much!”
