Lisa Dale, Headteacher at Howbridge Church of England Junior School, recently wrote a piece for The Headteacher magazine about creating a long-term strategy to support SEND pupils.
After receiving a ‘Requires Improvement’ grade from Ofsted, Lisa Dale recognised the need to put a comprehensive plan in place that would improve the school’s SEND provision. Asking advice from the Essex County Council and specialist teachers, the school began to upskill its team and deliver additional training programmes for staff members.
Teachers at the school worked closely with the school’s Inclusion Lead to introduce new teaching initiatives in English and Mathematics that better support children with specific difficulties. The school also embarked on several new building projects that cater to SEND pupils with special physical needs, including a set of ramps and a second accessible toilet.
Lisa Dale discusses several other ways in which the school has started to put its strategic aims into practice, such as organising one-to-one time between SEND pupils and staff and running nurture clubs outside of lesson time.
Lisa Dale’s article on kickstarting a new SEND provision can be read on The Headteacher website.
