Families of children at William Martin Church of England Junior School are benefitting from a six-week cookery programme, where parents and carers are taught how to prepare and cook nutritious meals in a slow cooker.
The six-week course, which is funded by Essex County Council, will provide families with healthy and cost-effective recipes that they can share at home. Led by the school’s programme leader, Bonnie Jones, the course invites families into the school to spend quality time together and cook nutritious meals in a slow cooker, which includes dishes like bread, pulled chicken, chilli con carne and curry.
Essex ActivAte aims to support the mental and physical wellbeing of primary school children through a variety of family activities, including the provision of nutritious meals. The programme was introduced after Essex County Council recognised that lower-income working families were potentially missing out on benefits-based free school meals during half-term time.
Gina Bailey, Headteacher at William Martin Church of England Junior School, commented:
“We’re delighted to be able to offer families in our local community the chance to come together and share ideas and tips for cooking nutritious meals. One of the many benefits of this course is that parents and carers can keep the slow cookers after the programme has finished!”
