Children from Years Five and Six at Two Village Church of England Primary School have been spending part of their Spring Term jumping into the exciting Spoken Word Power project. Supported by Eastside, Spoken Word Power is a new project that aims to encourage a positive attitude amongst children towards language and learning, creating a platform where the next generation of young people can speak up and have a voice.
As part of the project, Two Village welcomed performance artist, Martha Pailin, to the school to run two interactive workshops. Each workshop helped inspire the children to take their creativity to the next level and perform their own spoken word poetry with the theme of ‘Speaking Your Truth’. In groups, the children were then challenged to compose poems for a Poetry Slam in front of their teachers and classmates. Every group performed incredibly well, with the children coming up with some fantastic pieces of poetry on the spot.
The winning teams from each year group, chosen by Mrs Bennett and Martha Pailin, went on to represent the school in the regional World Poetry Day celebration at the Lakeside Theatre of Essex University. The children took on the daunting task of performing in front of an even bigger audience of friends, family and other competing schools; the way they approached their performances with confidence and imagination made both the school and the children’s families very proud.
Libby, one of the school’s finalists, said
“The chance to perform in front of the audience at the Riverside Theatre has really helped my confidence.”
