Recently, Rolph C of E took part in Bulbs4kids, an international campaign which aims to immerse primary school pupils in nature through fun activities. Their initiative gives the kids hands-on experience, allowing them to have fun watching the plants grow, as well as educating them about the importance of plants in our ecosystems.
According to previous research, it has shown that this interaction with nature can help contribute to children’s healthy development. Having plants in the school environment has been shown to help improve focus and reduce stress.
Gardening as a class can play a vital role in teaching children empathy, teamwork and overall creating positive relationships.
Last November, Bulbs4kids supplied the school with 600 bulbs from Holland to plant and watch grow. The children were encouraged to work together to plant their flower bulbs and were able to watch as the shoots slowly emerged into beautiful flowers.
Forest school and Outdoor Learning Lead, Emma Sweeney, said “The children enjoyed planting the bulbs in November. During the spring the bulbs created a beautiful array of colours beside the pond in the woodland area.
“The primary school then sent photographs and a time lapse video of their blooming flowers to bulbs4kids, to take part in the Golden Flower Bulb competition.
“Out of 200 schools in the UK, Rolph C of E were chosen as the winners, and received a stunning, hand crafted Golden Bulb award all the way from Holland! Year 4 pupils were also rewarded with water bottles for all their hard work and contributions to the project.”
What an amazing achievement for the school and the pupils! It’s great to hear that Rolph Primary have won this award and have been able to create such a lovely garden, whilst having fun and learning.
