Kate Tokgoz, SEND Leader and Chair of the Mental Health and Wellbeing Team at Southminster Church of England Primary School, recently wrote a piece for The Headteacher magazine about supporting SEND pupils with behavioural difficulties.
After experimenting with ‘time-out’ and other disciplinary action, Kate Tokgoz worked closely with other members of the school’s Senior Leadership team to set up the Base – a unit in the school designed to support children who struggle to cope in a classroom setting.
Southminster introduced a variety of new stimuli for the children, including a purpose-built play area that pupils can visit during any time of the day to spend time outdoors. The Base aims to provide nurture-style provision with a more relaxed timetable, with creative activities like craft and cooking interspersed between key skills.
Kate Tokgoz discusses the importance of prioritising the children’s social and emotional needs by offering sensory stimulation throughout each school day; the Base is equipped with a wide range of special objects, including weighted blankets, wobble boards and fidget toys.
Kate Tokgoz’s article about using nurture to create a calmer school can be read on The Headteacher website.
