Teachers and students at Rolph Church of England Primary School hosted a special opening ceremony for their new pond and woodland area earlier this week.
The school’s outdoor learning area, which is used by children from Nursery to Year 6, now boasts a beautiful pond and campfire area. To allow the children to experience nature first-hand, the school has also installed several bird boxes around the pond, which classes will be able to check during their outdoor sessions.
This was all made possible by Galloper Wind Farm, which made an incredibly generous donation of £5,000 to fund the rejuvenation of the area. The group has been funding local environmental and sustainability projects for the last decade, including the building of a new visitor hut for the Thorpeness and Aldringham Heritage Group and an all-access path from RSPB’s North Wall for the Waveney Bird Club.
During the opening ceremony, several children shared hand-written speeches about the importance of nature and caring for our wildlife, which visitors found very inspiring.
Karen Jones, Headteacher at Rolph Church of England Primary School, said;
“It was lovely to have our whole school community come together in the woodland to celebrate a project that started last summer. Thank you so much to all the staff, parents, carers and children that have helped to make this fantastic area that we can all enjoy together. A huge thank you especially to Mrs Sweeney, who has been here during the holidays, over weekends, in the evenings, to help us make this a special area we can all enjoy!”
We’re excited for the children to experience new learning opportunities now that they can explore the school’s beautiful outdoor learning area and its wildlife.
