To celebrate this year’s Comic Relief, Latchingdon Church of England Primary School organised a series of special book-themed activities for the children and their parents to dive into.
Over the course of the last week, children from across the school have been bringing in their favourite books from home and reading with other classes, ending the week with a surprise visit from a travelling Book Fair. The children also took part in a one-off live lesson with celebrity Dermot O’Leary as part of Essex’s ‘Year of Reading’ campaign, which helped inspire them to keep reading outside of school.
The school continued its celebrations with a cake decorating competition, which challenged students to create an eye-catching cake inspired by a book. Teachers were particularly impressed with the creativity of each entry, which made the task of choosing a winner very difficult. After some tough deliberation, it was Abigail from KS1 and Amelia from KS2 who were crowned the champions, each winning a £5 voucher to spend at the Book Fair.
These delicious cakes were then sold to parents during their visit to the school, with all the money raised from the sales being donated to Comic Relief. Combined with the money raised from the children’s ‘Crazy Hair Day’, which saw them turn up to class in the whackiest hairstyle possible, the school raised an astonishing £404.37.
All of the children, teachers and parents who contributed throughout the week should be incredibly proud of themselves. Your hard work and enthusiasm has made a big difference to those most in need.
