Headteacher of Great Clacton Church of England Junior School, Karen Jones, recently wrote an article for The Headteacher magazine about implementing a new behaviour management system and culture within her school.
When Karen arrived at Great Clacton she noticed that there was a consistent pattern of bad behaviour, with the same children always ending up outside her office. With the support of her Deputy Head, Karen decided she wanted to find a new approach and was more inclusive and that better met the children’s basic needs.
After attending training on Therapeutic Management of Behaviour and consulting the work of Paul Dix, it was decided that the school would adopt an approach that was more focused on ‘consequence’ rather than punishment.
With the approach obtaining some impressive results over 18 months, Karen wanted to share her thoughts on this model with other headteachers.
