Yesterday saw the celebration of the 25th anniversary of World Book Day, with schools from across the Trust taking part in a wide variety of activities throughout the course of the day.
Created by UNESCO in 1995 as part of a worldwide celebration of reading, World Book Day aims to encourage children to read for pleasure and develop a greater love for books. Each school brought something unique to the day, including reading-themed science experiments, celebrity storytimes and even a virtual tour of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid studio!
St Osyth Church of England Primary School organised an exciting day of reading-inspired fun thanks to Puffin Books, with the children embarking on a series of virtual activities designed to challenge their writing skills and get them thinking about the diverse world of books. This included a special storytime with pop singer Tom Fletcher, who read the children an extract from his bestselling book ‘The Danger Gang’.
After listening to a story of magic and superpowers, the children had a virtual draw-along with illustrator Benji Davies, who taught them how to draw the characteristic Puffin from his and Michael Morpurgo’s new book ‘The Puffin Keeper’. The day ended with a fantastically disgusting anatomy quiz with comedian Adam Kay and a virtual tour of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid studios with author Jeff Kinney!
Children from both St Osyth and Mistley Norman Church of England Primary School enjoyed their very own ‘Masked Reader’ activity; inspired by ITV’s ‘Masked Singer’, classes were challenged to watch videos of different teachers reading extracts from books and poems and guess who the voices belonged to. Each of the teachers filmed themselves reading using an animated filter and voice changer, making the challenge just that little bit harder!
