Lisa Dale, Headteacher of Howbridge C of E Junior School in Whitham, recently wrote a piece for The Headteacher magazine about how the school have been making the best of the COVID-19 pandemic by supporting local causes and making a real difference in the community.
After being informed of a ‘bonus’ monitoring inspection just four days prior to the school’s official re-opening, Mrs Dale was able to reflect on the vast range of remote provisions that the school had been making for both its pupils and their families. These provisions have included daily pastoral support, phone calls and virtual meetings, all designed to give the children as much support as possible during this difficult period of learning.
As a Church School, Mrs Dale notes that supporting the local community is an important part of the children’s learning experience, which has seen the school post hand-written letters to local care homes and special cards to those struggling with isolation. Children who struggled to make it into school were also sent hampers and packages for themselves and their families, a gesture which Mrs Dale feels to be a duty of Church schools across the board.
